A talk given at the Buddhist Society of Victoria (BSV), by Bhante Buddharakkhita. Please note there is another monk with the same name at the Buddhist Society of WA.
As the first Buddhist monk from Africa, Bhante feared receiving probing questions from immigration officers during his travels. As a child, he also feared swimming but made the effort to face the fear head on. Eventually he became a scuba diving instructor. Fear starts from birth and perpetuates through our life. Born into this world, we leave the comfort of our mother's womb into the unknown world. Over to you - What are your fears? How do you deal with them?

Ajahn Visuddhi talks about our unconscious hidden conceit and need to compete and defend our individuality, status, uniqueness, identity or self. As well as our inner need to conform and be the same. Ajahn also reflects on how we can have an insidious wish for others to fail so we don’t feel like failures. Why do we feel we must keep up with Jones’ and be equal to others? Finally how do we overcome this, so we can relax and just live in a friendly community?

Week six of the Rains season and this week we had Rob Hendry. Rob is a recent convert to meditation and an Armadale Meditation Group (AMG) regular. Rob grew up entrenched within Christianity and has a Bachelors’ Degree in Theology. He has preached regularly in Christian churches, and turned to meditation during last year’s AMG Rains schedule as a way to deal with both stress, pain and illness. He was quickly converted to the trans-formative power of meditation and is eager to share its benefits with others. Rob’s talk this evening focused on his interest in the areas of commonality between Buddhism and Christianity.
Rob then lead the group in a thirty minute meditation focusing on the breath and simplicity. This meditation is well suited to both beginners and experienced alike.
After meditation Rob continued his talk on the common areas with Buddhism and Christianity. Towards the end of the evening Rob opened to questions.
